On February 28, 2012, the Town of Herndon adopted the Herndon Metrorail Station Area Study to guide future redevelopment in the area of the Metro station and identify new prospects for economic growth.
The planning process included extensive community outreach and participation, including several workshops and public meetings with the Planning Commission and Town Council. The Town’s work on the plan extended from May 2010 through August 2012.

The study area for the Herndon Metrorail Station Area Plan focused on the land area within Herndon, north of the planned Metrorail station. The station will be built in the median of the Dulles Toll Road and Airport Access Highway, with a pedestrian bridge that will connect the station to Herndon. The study area includes about 110 acres north of the new station and with 38 acres targeted for transit-oriented development.
